When my daughter was born, her mother didn’t leave her in the care of anyone besides me or her mom for months. She didn’t trust anyone with our baby.
She spent weeks interviewing and asking friends so she could find just the right sitter she’d feel comfortable leaving our baby girl with for a few hours so she could run errands and get her nails done.
It was a bit easier when our second daughter came along 3 years later, but I can still remember the first time we got on a plane without our babies.
Terror gripped my wife’s body the whole plane ride (there was a lot of turbulence). All we both could think about were their little faces and my wife imagined them growing up never knowing how much we loved them, not having a recording of our voices or even letters from us; tears ran down my wife’s face nearly the whole ride.
My wife started writing a letter on the plane, but it didn’t make her feel any better. “What kind of parents were we not to think of this until now,” screamed my mind.
If you knew how easy it is to make sure your kids would be taken care of in the best way possible and never be taken from your home, put into the foster care system and then raised by people you wouldn’t want, I know you’d take care of it.
Or, you might think you have taken care of it.
Do you want to know the truth?
I know what you’re saying now. “Richard, you’re just trying to scare me. My kids would never go into the foster care system if something happened to me. “ That’s unrealistic.
Listen, I’m a parent just like you and I hate scare tactics. The truth is that your children WILL be taken from your home if the something happens to you and you do not take the simple actions I describe here.
This is a real-life possibility that has happened many times and I KNOW you want to do everything you can to make sure the most important people in your life are always cared for in the best way possible, especially if something happens to you!
Protecting your children from this devastating scenario is as easy as taking 7 simple steps. And if you knew what these steps were you would take them.
Because, obviously, you’d do whatever it takes to make sure that your children were never taken from your home, never raised by anyone you wouldn’t want, and always had the resources they need to be raised the right way, go to college, start their own family and become successful.
In bringing my sensibility as a former social worker into estate planning, I’ve made it my mission to let parents know this extremely important information.
